Are you passionate about improving EDI in the Physics field? Get involved with PHAS EDI!
Either join a working group(s) as a volunteer any time during the academic year by contacting the emails below, or apply in the Summer to become a member.

Working Groups

The EDI committee invites department members external to the EDI committee to participate as volunteers in working groups dedicated to advancing initiatives. Working groups advance priorities, adapting as ongoing initiatives evolve and department priorities change. If you are interested in contributing to initiatives and change in the department, sign up for/reach out to any of the following three groups.

  • Professional Development & Resources: Foster inclusive climate in the department and in the classroom – Contact adele.ruosi@ubc.ca
  • Community Building: Organize events to foster networks and link with existing groups – Contact mciver@phas.ubc.ca
  • Support Systems: Create support systems (mentorships program, orientation, outreach initiatives, scholarships and address high cost of living) – Contact pedrovg@phas.ubc.ca.

Committee leadership and membership

Interested in joining the EDI Committee itself?
The UBC PHAS Department Head will appoint two faculty or staff department members as committee co-chairs. These leadership roles will be re-appointed every two years to promote inclusivity and sustainability.
Annually in Summer, a call for PHAS EDI committee membership will be open. Students, graduate students, post doctoral scholars, research assistants, faculty and staff are all welcome to apply for a minimum one-year appointment and will be paid for . Everyone is encouraged to join for a period of more than one year. Student and postdoc committee members will be paid for labor outside of meeting times.
